DIY Feature - Quinn Worthington and Braeden Suggitt

Like most of us, Quinn and Braeden wanted to take long road trips in a comfortable and convenient way, that’s when they decided to build a teardrop trailer.

They completed their build in Ontario, Canada using our DIY Vaga plans. Here’s some insight on their build!

What made you want to build a tiny camper?

We love camping and wanted to be able to do longer trips with ease! We loved the idea of being able to pull into a site and set up in less than 10 minutes.

What was your experience level with the skills required to build a camper (wood working, electrical, metal work, etc.) when you started?

Braeden is an experienced hobbyist woodworker and we had no experience with metal work. We had an experienced family member help us out with understanding the electrical part!

What was the first step in your build?

Commit to buying the DIY plan. Once we knew we had enough space, time, and funds to build the trailer, we were committed and carried on with the next steps!

What was your favorite part of the build?

Watching the big steps come together! Every step we completed, it looked more and more like the finished product. The first time this happened was when the walls and galley cabinets went up and we could see our space coming together!

What was the most difficult part of the build?

Sourcing parts. We don't have the same product availability in Canada, so finding some of the not-so-common parts or materials proved difficult.

How long has it taken you so far?

April 30th we got the trailer frame, and we had our maiden voyage camping trip on October 28th! (6 months, with a few cosmetic things still ongoing..)

Would you do anything differently?

If we were to do it again, we would make sure we didn't have a deadline. Working in a self-imposed time crunch was stressful.

What are you most looking forward to?

We are hoping to do some longer road trips!

Any tips for someone that wants to build a tiny camper but doesn’t know where to start?

Practice on some smaller projects to be comfortable using tools, and make sure you are a great problem solver! Even with the DIY plans, you have to have some creative problem solving. So be prepared for a puzzle!

How did using Wander Tears DIY plans and having the resources provided affect your build process and time?

It was nice to have a series of steps to follow. It would have been hard to figure out on our own what the order of operations should be.

Travel is an investment in yourself.
