DIY Feature - Matt Kelley

Like most of us, Matt reasoning for building a teardrop was because he prefers spending time within nature in peace and solitude wherever possible.

They completed their build in North Carolina using our DIY Vaga plans. Here’s some insight on their build!

What made you want to build a tiny camper?

I wanted to be able to camp easily and travel without needing to worry about buying a hotel room or any of that. We prefer in spending time within nature in peace and solitude wherever possible.

What was your experience level with the skills required to build a camper (wood working, electrical, metal work, etc.) when you started?

I've built a few pieces of furniture and have gathered the tools necessary for that. I have learned basic woodworking skills by doing so. I had very limited knowledge of electrical systems or metal work.

What was the first step in your build?

The first step was to decide on how to go about starting. I searched through many different teardrop building forums, YouTube videos, and such. Eventually, I came across wander tears and settled on that.

What was your favorite part of the build?

I wouldn't say any of it is particularly a favorite, but each stage felt like an accomplishment. My favorite part is seeing it completed.

What was the most difficult part of the build?

Without a friend, and even with two people putting the hatch on is a scary process. In fact a lot of the process requires a helping hand if possible.

How long has it taken you so far?

Not including the planning phase, I'd say almost 5 months.

If you're comfortable sharing, what was the total cost of the build?

More than expected... It ended up costing around $11,000. That's including tools and materials. We also purchased premium components such as timbren axels.

Would you do anything differently?

Yes... I would have went ahead and bought the prefab trailer from Wander Tears.

What are you most looking forward to?

We are looking forward to traveling the country and have a home away from home. We look forward to easy setup and a comfortable space while camping.

Any tips for someone that wants to build a tiny camper but doesn’t know where to start?

Without the plans that Wander Tears provided I do not think we could have created such a beautiful and functional teardrop. Having the plans made it an actual possibility.

How did using Wander Tears DIY plans and having the resources provided affect your build process and time?

I'd say, without the plans and access to the Facebook forum, this process would have been way too confusing and full of uncertainty.

Travel is an investment in yourself.
