DIY Campers

  • Anywhere from 30 days to infinite! We have seen dedicated DIYers finish in less than a month, while most others average 4 months.

  • The plans include the Step by Step instructions in a PDF, a 3D SketchUp model, Excel spreadsheet of the cost breakdown, electrical diagrams, and a private facebook group with hundreds of other DIYers building the same models, all over the world.

  • Currently we do not have any plans available bigger than a 5x8 frame. We may create plans for a 5x9 or 5x10 camper in the future.

  • The Vaga and Renegade plans have been converted to Metric. Because they were designed using Imperial measurements and products sourced in the USA, the dimensional materials available to you may be slightly different.

  • The average cost to build a DIY camper ranges from $4,000 to $8,000. This is dependent on your need, or ability, to find used or refurbished parts, or changing up the materials you use. For example, furniture quality Baltic Birch is about twice as expensive as materials sources from a local lumber yard.

  • We make our trailer frames in house. We also sell trailer frames to DIYers like you. Submit a frame order form HERE.

  • Yes, we have had DIYers modify the Vaga Plans to be longer by adding the extra length in the center of the camper, keeping the front and back curves the same.

  • The plans come in a zip folder that includes all of the contents including the PDF plans, 3D SketchUp model, electrical diagrams and cost breakdown excel spreadsheet.

Custom Built Campers

  • Most vehicles with a tow capacity of greater than 1500 lbs will be able to tow our campers. We always recommend adding Trailer Brakes to your camper if you tow vehicle has a capacity between 1500 and 3500 lbs. To find your vehicles rating Google your vehicle model and year, and add “tow capacity”.

  • The Vaga starts at about 1200 lbs gets up to 1500lbs dry weight with more add-ons. The Renegade AT starts at 900lbs.

  • The standard axle is a Dexter 3500lb axle on 2000lb leaf springs. You can also upgrade to our recommended off-road Timbren HD axles rated for 2000 lbs.

  • We would love to have you out! To visit the shop it is best to reach out to us at daniel@wandertears.com to set up a time to visit. Normal Shop hours are 8am-4pm Monday through Friday.

  • We prefer anyone purchasing a camper to pick up the camper in person so we are able to meet you, and provide you with a full tour of your new camper. However, we will be glad help set up shipping through a third party if a local pickup is not an option.
