DIY Feature - Chris Phillips

Chris completed his DIY teardrop camper in under 2 months with the help of our plans and his creativity. He used our DIY Vaga Plans and modified them to fit his family's needs with a 5’x10’ trailer and a square-back.

We asked Chris to share some insight about being a first time teardrop builder, his previous experience, and how he came across the idea to create a tiny camper of his own. Here’s what he had to say:

What made you want to build a tiny camper?

I’ve always wanted a teardrop/tiny camper and never wanted to pay the retail price so I decided it was time to try to build one.

What was your experience level with building campers when you started?

Zero experience building any type of camper.

What was the first step in your build?

The first step was setting a budget and pricing out everything I think I would need to build the trailer material wise.

What was the most difficult part of the build?

The most difficult part of the build was probably the electrical and making sure everything was hooked up correctly and no wires were crossed on final hookup.

How long did it take you?

I started this build on February 20th and completed it April 9th, minus putting fenders on.

Any tips for someone that wants to build a tiny camper but doesn’t know where to start?

Get a good set of plans to follow or use as a guide if you want to deviate from them and have your own design. Take your time as well. Using Wander Tears DIY plans sped up the process for me knowing how to build the floor, where to put the ribbing and how to cut out the doors and fan. Also it gave me a great deal on how to run the wiring.

Would you do anything differently?

I would probably find a way to add an AC unit for cooling during the warmer months

Chris said he’s looking forward to being able to travel and work since he’s a full time work from home person now. Where do you think he should go first?
