Frequently asked questions.

FAQs:

1. What does Wander Tears do?

Wander Tears teaches and equips people to build professional-grade teardrop campers — the kind you’d expect from a high-end manufacturer — but from your own garage.
We provide detailed camper plans, step-by-step video tutorials, CNC files, and community support through The Builders Network, or individual plans. Whether it’s your first DIY project or your tenth, we help you go from idea to road-ready with confidence.

2. What are the different camper models?

We currently offer four designs, each with different difficulty levels and styles:

  • Vaga – the flagship teardrop, built around a precision trailer frame. It’s the most complex build with beautiful curves and high-end finish potential.

  • Rambler – our most beginner-friendly “squaredrop” style camper that sits directly on a 5x8 trailer. Simple to build, adaptable, and ideal for a first project.

  • Renegade – a hybrid teardrop, featuring a half hatch galley and lower cargo area. A perfect balance of aesthetics and practicality.

  • Hopper – another beginner and budget friendly model. The hopper is our only 4x8 model (for now) and can be assembled in less than a week.

Each model can be made off-road capable, insulated for 4-season use, and customized with your preferred gear.

3. Which model is best for a beginner?

The Rambler. It’s designed for first-time builders with minimal tools and limited shop space. The flat roof and squared edges simplify every stage — cutting, sealing, and assembly.
If you keep it basic (no roof racks, minimal wiring, and standard doors), many members finish their Rambler in about two weeks of part-time work.

4. Which model is the most advanced or technical?

The Vaga is the most complex build and requires the highest precision.
It’s built around a custom trailer frame measuring exactly 59.75" wide x 95.75" long, with the axle placed 62" from the front of the frame.
Because the cabin wraps around the frame rather than sitting on top, every measurement matters. Builders who love precision craftsmanship, curves, and the satisfaction of a pro-grade teardrop tend to love the Vaga.

5. What are the total size and dimensions of each camper?

Trailer & Weight

6. What trailer frame do I need?

  • Vaga: Requires a custom-built frame (59.75" x 95.75") with the axle centered 62" from the front.
The cabin is constructed around this exact footprint — the fit must be perfect.

  • Rambler & Renegade: Sit directly on a standard 5x8 utility trailer frame. Bolt-together kits, Harbor Freight frames, and custom-welded options all work.

✅ Tip: Bolt-together frames are lighter and easier to ship, while welded frames are more durable for heavy off-road builds.

7. How much do the campers weigh?

Approximate finished weights (before loading gear):

  • Vaga: 1,200–1,600 lbs

  • Rambler: 900–1,200 lbs

  • Renegade: 1,000–1,400 lbs

Using lightweight frames, thinner plywood, and aluminum skin can reduce weight further — while added gear (roof rack, spare tire, solar system, awning) can add a few hundred pounds.

8. Can my SUV tow it?

Almost certainly. Most crossovers and small SUVs like the Subaru Outback, Toyota RAV4, or Ford Escape can tow the Rambler and Renegade with ease.
Even the heavier Vaga is still under 1,600 lbs dry, so mid-size SUVs and light trucks are more than capable.

Rule of thumb: Stay below 80% of your vehicle’s max tow rating when loaded.
Example: 3,500-lb rating → target loaded trailer ≤ 2,800 lbs.

9. Can I build it lighter?

Yes — choosing a light-duty or bolt-together trailer frame can remove 200–250 lbs from total weight.
Other ways to lighten your build:

  • Use ½” plywood instead of ¾” where structure allows.

  • Skip heavy galley cabinets or drawers.

  • Use foam-backed insulation and lightweight aluminum trim.

Light builds are ideal for vehicles with tow ratings under 3,000 lbs.

10. Are they off-road capable?

Yes — any Wander Tears camper can be made off-road ready.
It depends on your axle, tire, and frame setup, not the model itself.
For rough terrain, we recommend:

  • Timbren or torsion axles

  • 15–17” all-terrain tires

  • 2–4” lift blocks

  • Reinforced tongue and fenders

  • Articulating coupler for steep approaches

All three models handle off-grid use beautifully with the right trailer setup.

Cost & Budget

11. How much does it cost to build?

Most DIY builds cost between $3,000 and $15,000, depending on materials, features, and how resourceful you are.
Builders who shop smart and use secondhand parts stay near the lower end. Full custom interiors, solar systems, and new components push the higher range.

12. Which model is the cheapest to build?

The Rambler — by a long shot.
It’s smaller, requires fewer materials, and can be built with basic parts from local stores. The square walls and flat roof mean less waste and faster progress.

13. Why is the Vaga more expensive?

The Vaga’s curved design, precise frame fit, and integrated galley add time and cost. Builders often upgrade it with premium finishes — aluminum skin, insulation, and high-end doors — making it more of a “dream camper” project.

14. Can I save money using recycled or second-hand parts?

Absolutely. Many members source windows, fans, doors, and even frames from Facebook Marketplace or scrap yards.
A little creativity can save thousands — just make sure your parts match plan dimensions before cutting.

Building & Materials

15. Do I need a big shop or special tools?

No. Many members build in a driveway, carport, or small garage.
Essential tools include:

  • Drill & bits

  • Circular saw or track saw

  • Jigsaw

  • Orbital sander
    Optional but helpful:

  • Router, table saw, or pocket-hole jig for cleaner cabinetry.

If you can measure and cut plywood accurately, you can build a Wander Tears camper.

16. How long does it take to build?

Build time varies by model and how “finished” you want it:

  • Rambler: ~2 weeks for a basic build; 3–4 weeks with upgrades.

  • Renegade: 3–5 weeks average.

  • Vaga: 6–8 weeks or more due to precision fitting and finishing work.

You’ll spend most time on sealing, assembly, and wiring — not cutting.

17. Do you use fiberglass on your campers?

No, we do not fiberglass high-exposure zones.
Instead, we rely on oil-based polyurethane, RV sealant, zip tape, butyl tape, and aluminum trim for long-term waterproofing.
It’s cleaner, lighter, and easier for DIY builders to maintain or repair later.

18. How do I waterproof my camper?

Follow the proven Wander Tears method:

  1. Seal all exposed wood (oil-based polyurethane for exterior, water-based for interior).

  2. Use zip tape on corners and end grain.

  3. Apply RV underlayment on the bottom.

  4. Mount aluminum panels with RV sealant.

  5. Use butyl tape behind all trim and screws.

  6. Overhang your hurricane hinge and direct water away from seams.

“Water damage isn’t a guarantee — it’s a result of skipping steps. Do it right once, and it’ll last decades.”
